Emerson's argument in "The American Scholar" about American society still holds true today.
A reason Emerson's argument is still true today is because people normally work with one job and only do that. Take my mom's job for instances, she works at FedEx and sometimes she changes routes and she gets thrown off a little bit because she's not use to the new area. In the article Emerson says "The priest becomes a form; the attorney a statue book; the mechanic a machine; the sailor the rope." That is true for most people, when they get outside their area of work they are confused.
Emerson knows what other people don't realize. People think they are good at what they do, most likely because they are but, they probably don't realize is that they my not succeed at other things. Others know they are good at one thing and that's why they do what they do. My dad works for the government and is good at it, but he knows he is good at other things too. People are shocked because my dad is a photographer too. People think he can only be a government worker, which is a lot of proof of Emerson's article.
